Human-computer interaction is the kind of discipline which is neither the study of humans, nor the study of technology, but rather the bridging between those two. So you always have to have one eye open to the question: what can the technology do? How can you build it? What are the possibilities? And one eye open to the question: what are people doing and how would this fit in? What would they do with it? If you lose sight of either of those, you fail to design well…. I think the challenge is to really keep knowledge of both the technology and the people playing off against each other in order to develop new things.

Aquesta cita del Terry Winograd està extreta del llibre Human-Computer Interaction de Jenny Preece. Del comentari de Winograd s’extreu una definició molt interessant de la Interacció Persona-Ordinador i posa en consideració el cicle de oportunitats i possibilitats de la tecnologia.

Moltes definicions de IPO acaben posant l’èmfasi bé en les persones o bé en la tecnologia. La definició de Winograd s’apropa a la IPO com la disciplina que s’ocupa no de l’estudi dels humans, ni tampoc de l’estudi de la tecnologia, sinó de l’espai que hi ha entre els dos. El mateix Winograd, en una altra part del text afirma

The name ‘human-computer interaction’ is in some ways a misnomer because it focuses on the fact that you have a person using a computer. The fact that the person is trying to do something means it’s really ‘human-work interaction’ with the computer as an intermediary. So I think for me the focus isn’t on interacting with the computer, but interacting through the computer.

Per altra banda, Winograd presenta el cercle d’oportunitats i possibilitats que ofereix tecnologia i que es directament proporcional al bon disseny. La relació de les persones amb la tecnologia és un procés dinàmic que es retroalimenta. A mesura que les persones demanen a la tecnologia que els proporcioni la possibilitat de fer coses noves, la tecnologia no només ofereix allò que se li demana, sinó que amplia les possibilitats del que es pot fer, oferint noves oportunitats. Aprofitar aquestes oportunitats fa que es puguin fer coses noves i això provoca que se li tornin a demanar noves necessitats. És un cercle virtuós que depen del disseny, si es dissenya be la tecnologia es retroalimenta afavorint a les persones.
